"The best of everything a reader could want! Intrigue, mystery, suspense, light romance, all told with a delicate, nuanced hand in command.
What a perfect read! This book feels wholly relevant and not overly futuristic. Everything was so well and aptly named, put together, and scenic, from the names of places and people to the gadgetry. This is a book that brings all a reader's senses to life! It is a read you can completely immerse yourself in.
I am a new fan of K.M. Krenik. This is a book written for the masses, forwarned with triggers. It glosses over sensitive material while fully exposing it without going into lewd detail. Genius! The same can be said for the expletives! Having the swearing relegated to symbols was very much appreciated. In the world where I choose to immerse myself, swearing has no place, is entirely unnecessary, and lends itself to a lack of intelligence and immorality.
Finally, a book that is a page-turner, like a James Patterson book, yet edgy and moody enough to find traits suited to some of Dean Koontz's works, yet in a lane that removes itself from their typical over-reach of vulgar and crude material which makes their books unpalatable to me. "Danger Lies Within" is a true triumph!
'Danger Lies Within,' what a title! It's so well nestled within the pages of this book and takes on a multi-layered meaning. Readers everywhere will rejoice!
I could easily see this book turned into a television series or a movie. It has robust characters, a large cast, but not so big as to cause confusion, and nonstop action. Good versus evil on a grand scale, much like today's world, and simultaneously intimate and personal. This book tells of things to come in a way that makes it believable because it is all too real.
'Danger Lies Within' can be read as a stand-alone, though reading the prequel wouldn't hurt! The short excerpt from book two, found at the end of book one, definitely leaves the reader wanting more. (Now, I'll be left to fret and worry until I have book two in my hands—gah!)
My hats off to the author; the only loose end (that might be tidied up in book two) is the serpent earring found by Courtney and handed to Sean. I would assume that was part of all the ransacking and commotion within the castle walls, but as it was never mentioned again, I'm unsure if this is accurate. While earrings are essential to the overall puzzle, I suppose I'll need to "keep calm and read on" until my curiosity is satiated and all is revealed when the last page of the final book within this series has been written and published by the author, and then subsequently turned by me as a reader, somewhere down the road. Kudos!"

"Krenik kicks off the Ranfurly Mysteries series with a genre-blending thriller that defies expectations. In the summer of 2226, Courtney Drake receives a letter from the dreaded government, PAX, telling her that her husband, Keith, has been executed. Devastated, Courtney and her two college-age children, Nick and Laurel, must persevere. Not far away, Lord Robert Ranfurly is faced with a lesser crisis: the departure of the latest nanny to his five-year-old twins. Courtney answers the Ranfurly ad and is selected for the job, but on her first day the gardener is murdered. Soon she is thrown into a vortex of action and intrigue, all complicated by her simultaneous attraction for both Lord Ranfurly and his driver, Sean Knight.
The world that Krenik creates mixes several beloved by readers: a romanticized version of pre-Victorian England with vast manors, kissable lords, and stern household managers; a drone-patrolled post-apocalyptic dystopia with a deep and intrusive State inserting tracker chips into its citizens and allowing profitable human trafficking to flourish; and an idyllic, fantasy-touched woodland paradise, complete with adorable pets that include a flying dragon. The action mainly takes place in the manorial microcosm and the futuristic deep State ruled by the evil PAX, a group of market-minded billionaires blinded by their wealth and power, with scant regard for anything else. It’s a lot to keep track of but offers much to explore in future entries.
Though there’s much worldbuilding to cover, Krenik smoothly ramps up and maintains the suspense till the end, nicely setting up the next book, weaving in some promising romance, and touching on contemporary worries of plutocratic authoritarianism. Climactic revelations satisfyingly pay off the clues that Krenik plants with deft sleight-of-hand, and the mysterious backstory of Lord Ranfurly is neatly woven into the action without any damage to the pacing and anticipation. This is a good start to the series and the strong, sensuous Lord Ranfurly, him of the golden heart, is sure to earn some diehard fans."

K.M. Krenik delivers a thrilling and timely warning with Danger Lies Within, a wildly imaginative first piece of the Ranfurly Mysteries series. ... In this surprising mix of political thriller and sci-fi/fantasy, magical creatures and advanced sci-fi tech are not the stuff of dreams, but an accepted part of reality. Dragons are an endangered species, not mythical beasts, and flying cars aren’t just a potential, but a commercial product, albeit an expensive one. This blank check setting grants the author boundless room for creativity and genre crossover, without forcing readers to suspend much disbelief.
Grounding the novel firmly in the present, the globalist cabal storyline that runs through the novel is a less-than-subtle nod at contemporary sentiments in the real world, where the capitalist billionaire class continues to fuel wealth inequality and monopolize power. In that vein, Krenik’s storytelling feels both prophetic and allegorical, sitting at the crossroads of satire and dire warning, addressing issues of corporate influence, corrupt law enforcement, technological ethics, and moral responsibility in the face of an immoral state. Characters like Nick Drake and McGregor keep the anti-establishment rhetoric flowing in the prose, with much of the premise based on rebellion and resistance.
... the relationships between characters are sharp and sincere...Krenik creates a refreshing spin on the reclusive rich hero trope with her genre-defying storyline...a disarmingly good read from an exciting voice in dystopian sci-fi, unveiling a uniquely original world that will appeal equally to readers of science fiction, fantasy, and thriller fiction.
